Cill Rialaig

I was awarded a 2-week residency at the Cill Rialaig Project in Kerry which was partly supported by Ards Arts Individual Artist Award. This was such an amazing experience. Kerry is such a stunning part of Ireland. Surrounded by the wild Atlantic/rich history it would be possible not to be inspired/rejuvenated by this setting. The location for the residency is very unique, called the ‘last road in Ireland’ the project consists of redeveloped houses predating the Irish famine which are now used as individual cottages/studios for artists. Initially I was quite intimidated by the isolation but you find a real sense of clarity in the detachment from daily stimulus such as the Internet and television. I explored all around Kerry whilst there collecting photography which I can then screen print. I also worked on new poetry/editing poetry. I made some really lovely friends. I woke up each day like an excited kid to look out my window and out onto the Atlantic. I was over awed by the beauty of the sea and my time in Kerry.

I was lucky enough to be awarded a 2 week residency at the Tyrone Guthrie Centre kindly supported by Ards Arts. The hauntingly beautiful setting is a great source of inspiration. The stunning house features a beautiful library, dining room and formal living room. Set in beautiful woodlands and over looking a lake it is the perfect setting for reflection and productivity. Each artist has their own private studio for concentrated work. All meals are prepared for you so that you can maximise your working time. A key aspect of the residency is that all residents [a mix of artists/composers/writers/poets/dancers] come together daily for dinner to exchange ideas and learn about each others disciplines. The experience was an incredible catalyst as I prepared work for my first solo exhibition. I met a wonderful array of people some of whom will be friends for life : ]
